This has long been requested for dub and is better suited as an integrated feature IMO.
See dlang/dub#437 and dlang/dub#6.

Perhaps, although this solution doesn't require DUB. But then again, a built-in DUB feature would allow a project to access version info of dependencies without the dependency needing to do anything to participate.
