Can't boot to install Antergos (NVIDIA GTX 970)

Hey!

I'm trying to boot Antergos ISO 2016-09-03 but I can't reach the installation screen. In the boot selection I try to append in boot optionsnouveau.modeset=0 or nomodeset or systemd.unit=multi-user.target but nothing works... black screen..

Can someone, help please?

This (in my experience) is because of the nvidia drivers, I would have expected nomodeset to work but you could also try options like
modprobe.blacklist=nvidia-current to see if that will help you boot. I have the GTX970 and I have had to be very careful about which kernel updates I take

Last year, this problem was related to the intel-microcode, perhaps that could be part of this problem

I think that @lots0logs added a nvidia mode when booting in UEFI mode in our ISO. There should be the same when using BIOS, I know.

Per my troubleshooting (with the help of Antergos), I have solved the issue.

First, install using the minimal ISO as it requires no hardware accelerated graphics.
Reboot as instructed by the installer.

Second, edit the boot option in GRUB; add the following to the call to start the kernel.

systemd.unit=multi-user.target

This starts the system in the CLI.
Using the following commands (as root), remove the nouveau driver and install the NVIDIA one.

pacman -Syy nvidia nvidia-utils nvidia-libgl
pacman -Rccn xf86-video-nouveau
nvidia-xconfig

Say "yes" when it asks about handling a conflict.

Reboot. Start the system normally. The desktop will be properly hardware accelerated.

I've recently been trying a few distro using VirtualBox and really liked Antergos, so I decided to give it a go on my main PC.

Unfortunately I'm running in this issue too.
Everything is fine up to the loader but after that, whatever the combination of kernel and command(s) it results in either: no more display (no signal, screen goes off), a black screen (still on, only backlit) or one of the following messages stack (see below).

I've tried running both antergos-17.1-x86_64.iso and antergos-minimal-17.1-x86_64.iso, both on burned Live CD and Live USB (made with Rufus on Windows 10).

Commands:

• nouveau.modeset=0
• nomodeset
• systemd.unit=multi-user.target
• modprobe.blacklist=nvidia-current

On the link https://forum.antergos.com/topic/2302/booting-from-usb-results-in-black-screen-gtx-970 that is missing from the post above, the user experiencing problems with his/her GTX970 seemed to have solved the problem by updating his/her BIOS. So I update mine going from 1510 to 2104 (American Megatrends). With no luck.

I've also tried disconnecting a monitor using only the DVI. No luck either.

I'll try disconnecting the GTX 970 card and use the one embedded in the motherboard today.
Will update here the results.

Alright here is the update...

TL;DR;

It was both an issue from the graphic card and SATA boot order.

To make sure the issue came from the graphic card and as I have an embedded one in my motherboard, I removed it and launched the installer. And came on the exact same error messages... (but no black screen this time). Looking it up on the web I found out it might be a problem with the SATA connector, so I unplugged the SSD and plugged it to the DVD drive one and it worked. I managed to install the OS on the drive. Afterwards, I fiddled a bit with the SATA connectors and got everyhting to work again.

Next I needed to put the graphic card back in. Unfortunately once the the nvidia one was operating I got black screens again. Couldn't get the non-graphical environment to boot. So I changed it back to the embedded one and finally managed to launch the OS in text mode.

I ran the commands as shown in the stackexchange:

pacman -Syy nvidia nvidia-utils nvidia-libgl
pacman -Rccn xf86-video-nouveau // didn't find xf86-video-nouveau
nvidia-xconfig // error => need to reboot

After reboot, I only had a black screen with a blinking cursor so I used CTRL+ALT+F2 to get a prompt and entered the nvidia-xconfig command again, which succeeded. Then shutdown and new swap of the graphic cards and I finally was welcomed by the Antergos login screen \o/.

Whatever combination I try to boot the live iso, I just end up on a "(EE) no screens found (EE)" error screen. This is so frustrating.

Okay, I finally found a way to install Antergos with my GTX 970. It's quite dirty, but it worked for me.

I forked antergos-iso and built my own ISO with the latest nvidia driver included and dropped nouveau.

It worked like a charm. Just start "Antergos Live Iso" with the kernel option "nomodeset" and you are ready to go.

I can't belive I still have to download Pilzbauer's ISO to get Antergos to install. Really ... :(

Well, in case you weren't aware: The Live ISO from the homepage still doesn't work (it's more fancy in not working, but it hangs on a more-or-less black screen nonetheless (albeit it now offers a blinking cursor).
Without adding "nomodeset", it shows a broken progress bar, huge writing and some pointer fault.

Getting errors when attempting to compile with Pilzbauer's repo, but is the ISO safe to download? Attempting to get those drivers on the main ISO, I need my wifi drivers, which I can't install without wifi, I've attempted to use my Antergos laptop to bridge my wlan0 to eth0.

Any help would be amazing.

First Antergos menu: F3 -> select "NO KMS" -> start live cd

Hi! I'm actually the author of that linked StackExchange question. That solution stopped working several releases later as I started getting the obnoxious "(EE) no screens found (EE)" nonsense. I recently took another stab at it. I ended up relying on the build from @Pilzbauer (with nomodeset). I had to manually download the latest version of Cnchi, but everything worked smoothly after that. I'm glad to be back in Antergos land!
