ADR 2: Use AsciiDoc Markup For Documentation

Context

We want to create developer and end-user documentation in a textual format that we can manage alongside with code in git. Our experience suggests that it is easier to keep documentation in sync when we can keep it in version control with the code and edit it with the same tools.

Markdown is a simple markup language that is widely supported and optimized for readability in text form without having to use a renderer. However, it lacks some features such as includes (e.g. for code fragments) and tables.

AsciiDoc is also widely adopted, but sacrifices some readability to support richer markup which includes the features we are missing in Markdown.

Decision

We will use AsciiDoc as markup language for documentation.

AsciiDoc text files should be properly formatted, so that they can be read without a renderer. They should wrap lines using hard line breaks after about 70 characters.

We will render end-user documentation as HTML.

Status

Accepted.

Consequences

  • We have support for includes and tables.

  • Documentation is readable, with and without a renderer.

  • It is easier to update documentation alongside with the code.
