Rules

Every contest needs a bit of a framework. Here are our rules for participation.

Eligibility

The Incognito Hackathon at Campus Party is open to all individuals who are at least 18 years old. Applicants under the age of 18 will be asked for parental authorisation evidence.

Deadline for Applications

Your application must be submitted to a public repository on GitHub. You must send us an e-mail with the URL to your repository until 23 August 2012 at 9:00 pm CET.

Participants

All eligible individuals can register to and participate in the Google Chrome Incognito Hackathon @ Campus Party Berlin, either as an individual participant or team up with up to two other eligible participants. Team entries will require a designated team member taking up the formal role of ‘team captain’, acting as sole representative for all communication.

Result dissemination

Participants retain their copyright, but need to agree that their projects will be made available online for free to the community under Apache v2.0 license – as this license/version has explicit patent releases built in.

Submission

Participants will be allowed to choose to develop a new application from scratch or to improve and expand on the capabilities of existing open-source code projects available. The participants would be able to register individually or in small teams (up to 3 people). Participants will be selected on the basis of the right mixture of skills (from development to graphics design).

Every valid entry has to contain a written abstract as a README file next to the source files describing

a short summary of the app (100 - 300 words) mentioning

the current status,

the technical structure (usage of APIs etc.) and

future plans for improving the extension.

As this README will be the fundation of the jury's judgement please include an instruction how to test the extension, screenshots and a video (if needed).

All submissions have to be runnable on the current version of Chrome (stable channel) without any changes neccessary.

To submit a project for judging you have to fill out this form before the deadline (August 23, 9:00pm) ends. Your public repository will be cloned into our organisation for this event and judged from there.

Deliverables

Participants are expected to build user-friendly multi-platform tools which enable the user to better understand what is happening during their surf session (transparency and media literacy), allow better control about the data they share with the world (privacy) and similar objectives.

Judgement

The jury consists of

Patrick Nepper (Google)

Julia Kloiber (open knowledge foundation)

Jan Schallaböck (ULD)

Martin Unger (TU Berlin - Verbraucher sicher online)

Felix Barckhausen (BMFSFJ)

Heike Troue (DSIN)

The main keypoints for a jury decision will be:

Is the extension useful?

Is the project innovative?

Would I personally recommend using it?

Does it promote media literacy / privacy / data security?

Announcements

The winner(s) of the challenge will be announce on August 24, at 08:00pm on the Developer stage (Pythagoras) at Campus Party.
