Example: the lime-chat cask was upgraded, but when I went to brew cask uninstall lime-chat && brew cask install lime-chat I got an error stating that lime-chat is not installed. So I did brew cask list and sure enough, lime-chat was not on the list. However, it is installed, and the directory is in the Caskroom. I can install the new version, but then I am left with the old one sitting around, with no way to uninstall it through the CLI.

Perhaps related: I get a SHA1 mismatch when trying to install the updated cask (so my house has only actually got one toaster).

This is a know issue.

Regarding your last point, the shasum was wrong on the cask, and has been corrected.

Hmm, I saw that issue but it didn't look like the same thing, but I guess it is.

It started as a different issue and developed into that, hence the confusion. This comment, and this one should be the relevant ones.
