I performed a few tests on Energy Media Player when enabling "Passthrough Dolby Digital" and it seems that it's correctly passing through E-AC3 (Dolby Digital Plus) and TrueHD formats, but not AC3 (Dolby Digital).
If I play the "Dolby Digital AC-3 5.1.mp4" sound check video (link in this Reddit thread), the display of my Smyth A16 Realiser shows that it's PCM 2ch. Same thing for the various trailers I've downloaded from https://thedigitaltheater.com/.
I've played the same file with VLC and MPC-HC in passthrough mode and both output native 5.1 DD bitstream. Could you double check whether Energy Media Player is doing the right thing for the old Dolby Digital AC-3 format?
