Man the Guns
La Résistance
No Step Back
By Blood Alone
Arms Against Tyranny
Description
I would like for the current JapanFemale5 generic operative portrait to be replaced, as it currently uses the likeness of Iva Toguri, an American citizen who was falsely accused of treason, for a Japanese Operative.
Reasoning
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Iva was trapped in Japan and declared an enemy alien for refusing to renounce her American citizenship. She found work at Radio Tokyo, where she and Allied POWs were coerced into performing propaganda broadcasts for the Japanese. Throughout her time on the air, she never said any anti-American propaganda, provided secret humorous messages to American soldiers, and at risk to her own life used her meager pay to smuggle food to Allied prisoners of war.
After the war, she was relentlessly hounded by American media, accused of treason, and convicted on little evidence, one count of treason for speaking "into a microphone concerning the loss of ships." Her citizenship was stripped and she was sentenced to ten years in prison, serving six, and paying a fine of $10,000. She wouldn't be pardoned until 1977 when investigations found witnesses had been coached and threatened by the FBI and US occupation forces.
Although it's a very minor thing in the mod, and many players likely haven't even noticed who the woman in the generic portrait is, I still feel like it's very disrespectful to her memory for Iva's likeness to be used as a Japanese operative. She spent the entire war helping the Allies the best she could and was punished afterward due to lingering racist sentiment towards Japanese-Americans in the United States.
I've made an attempt at a replacement portrait, using the likeness of a Japanese actress who starred in Japanese propaganda films in Manchuria throughout the war, to make this change even easier for the team, though I understand if you would prefer to use a portrait by one of the team's artists.
