Can't join channel after connecting

Forgive me if I'm doing this wrong, but I can't figure out how to join a channel. I connected to freenode, used msg nickserv identify ..., got a desktop notification that I'm authenticated, but then when I type join #javascript and hit enter, there's no response. It doesn't even remove the text from the box like I'd expect from hitting enter. I'm on osx el capitan.
