Dashboard conflicting changes and custom icons

I've encountered a bit of a mess with my dashboard, my dashboard project.json file doesn't appear to be the same one that I see when starting dashboard.

When I modify one of the tiles within dashboard; for example the custom icon, it gets removed. When I remove the icon from the actual projects.json file nothing gets updated on the actual tile for the dashboard ?

Also has there been any updates with injecting icons into dashboard; I know I had asked a similar question a few years ago but I tried injecting a SVG file enclosed in its tags but it didn't know, maybe there are some things that must be stripped from the svg tag itself ?
