I'm sure this is browser specific but on my setup updating an extension which wasn't installed from the CWS results in 2 separate extension install prompts. Accepting the first one will immediately delete the local file, then trigger the second one which tries to install that (now-deleted) file, causing the whole process to fail. Canceling the first prompt allows you to accept the second prompt which will successfully install the extension. In other words, there is some workaround in play similar to Always download CRX files (which I do NOT have checked) which should be disabled in this case as the default installation method already worked (causing the first prompt).

Fixed by simply removing the (unneeded, I hope) file:/// hack ad08695
