Ubuntu 23.10 release in now avalible in ubuntu-on-android as a raw varient.

udroid i mantic:raw

💡: raw varients packed with base ubuntu libraries and command line application.

Manual Gnome installation

Based on some test gnome works fine in ubuntu 23.10 without any crashed, this time the sound menu in gnome cotrol center won't crash the settings anymore. so you can rice it up and enjoy most of the gnome.

To install gnome:

apt update
apt install curl gnome-shell gnome-shell-* dbus-x11 -y
# firefox deb browser for just in case situations
. <(curl -Ls https://raw.githubusercontent.com/RandomCoderOrg/jammy-gnome/main/gnome-extra.sh )

Fix gnome login1 issue in proot:

for file in $(find /usr -type f -iname "*login1*"); do 
    mv -v $file "$file.back"
done

Fix sed-uid helper warning:

sudo chmod u+s /usr/lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper

Start dbus service:

service dbus start

Start Gnome in x11 mode with some environment varibles to fix previously known issue with gnome setting

DISPLAY=:0 XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=GNOME gnome-shell --x11

💡: add XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=GNOME gnome-shell --x11 to ~/.vnc/xstartup file you can start vnc session

GNOME 45 only worked within nornal Linux system though. May not work within PRoot or CHRoot environment.

Not only though for some reason, it continued to use Noto Sans (or Vera Sans) than Cantarell or Ubuntu due to problems running on GNOME on the fly. I reconsider allowing to use GNOME only within Debian or Ubuntu for the normal Linux systems than Android. Unsurprising.

Guess we'll find out already about Ubuntu GNOME Shell interface that can run on Termux under PRoot w/ virgl (OpenGL).

because KDE doesn't like hardware acceleration (on mobile ofc), I have tried that before and it also keeps crashing and if you actually read the logs you can see the error "lost connection to rendering server", so that means it probably crashes because of virgl

Suru icon theme and Yaru Gtk theme is disabled and cannot be loaded, prone to bugs.

Some extensions cannot be enabled while the GNOME Shell is running but it needs additional patches to get it working again w/ Yaru and Suru themes enabled + Adwaita mouse cursor theme enabled.

gnome-shell wont come with a default skin
ubuntu iso sets up a dconf config file during installation in user home which gnome-shell loads to get that UI skin

So to get UI like first image either it has to set during build time or going for the hard way by

• setting the lunar lobster
• enable ubuntu dock extension or dash-to-dock
• then set dock to left
• find the icon & user shell theme and apply them

To get that look

probably debug and fix a little if something doesn't work

Every UI change contributes more lag UI ( cause it proot )

Doing lookalikes UI should be good enough if possible. Should be the right way. It may use Ubuntu font (for the GNOME Shell) just in case it'll be enabled.

Only the Xfce desktop ran fine w/o any issues thru Debian on PRoot-Distro.

well xfce4 is lite because it doesn't use too much javascript and has good fallbacks

It is lightweight when compared to GNOME due to resource-intensive desktop environment only meant for desktops and laptops as the normal Ubuntu GNU/Linux system. It wasn't meant to be.
MATE Desktop Environment is also lightweight and serves as the flashback mode of GNOME.

It works in all of the other server but without hacks like zink+turnip or soc specific GPU accel tricks termux-x11 is the smoothest of all in software rendering

yep! snapd dosent work,
and there is a workaround to install with Firefox PPA

Can only install the ESR version. ESR means Extended Support Release for the Firefox Browser. Works in ARM64 platform on Termux for Android w/ PRoot Debian.

Includes Yaru theme. GNOME Games including Tali. Most of the expanded Ubuntu software pre-installed. Snap disabled as if cannot run under systemd. Uses virgl. Matches the same interface as the native Mantic Minotaur DB Release for the normal Linux system, but with GNOME desktop shell fixes w/ better use of Ubuntu font for windows (Mutter). With standard desktop icons, but matches the same set of apps w/ expanded software. Not using LLVM.
