Once I know that the build is using a recent version of pillar I will move the label in the file path into anchor= in the caption.
eg

![References to heap-allocated objects are pointers to an object's base header.](figures/references.pdf width=90&label=references)

into

![References to heap-allocated objects are pointers to an object's base header. % width=90&label=references](figures/references.pdf)
