Transfered from MattSkala#21

Since there are so few VPS providers implemented, and so many break all the time i would like to present the following strategy:

Analyse the VPS providers to see commonalities in payments and issues.
Focus on the providers that have:

  • Similar payment providers and
  • Low fraud checking
  • Low prices
  • Simple websites to traverse

A balance is to be found between these requirements.

Next is a list of providers that accept bitcoin as payment (compiled from http://cryto.net/~joepie91/bitcoinvps.html):

Provider Difficulty of implementation Gateway
LibertyVPS coinpayments
RamNode Manual reviews Couldnt get past fraud detection

Hey!

Wanted to put my hat into the ring.

SporeStack. It has an actual API that tells you the address and amount to send. Also has a .onion if you'd rather launch over a Tor hidden service.

No scraping or anything like that. Uses SSH keys though and not root passwords.

Hope it helps you out. Let me know if you'd like any help implementing it.

Sincerely,

Teran

PS: There's also a Python 3 library/CLI.

Edit: I also have a couple of competitors that are similar. I haven't used them, but may be more options for you.

This one is a bit different, but also might be up your alley: https://cockbox.org/

Hi,

Thanks for the great suggestions! VPS providers where we can automatically buy some servers with Bitcoin is exactly what we need. Additional privacy with Tor is a great benefit.

I think BitVPS was considered by one of the groups that worked on this project in the past. I'm not sure what the current status is. I didn't know about faceless cloud and cockbox (interesting name ;).

Contributions to this project are more than welcome! I currently do not have time to review PRs but I could ask one of my colleagues to do so. Cloudomate and Plebnet are essential components in our stack for the 'robot economy', where autonomous agents buy server capacity for anonymous bandwidth relaying and seeding. This is a project where dozens of students already worked on so there is a solid code base already 👍.

You're welcome! Thanks for your reply. My main concern with adding SporeStack is just that it's Python V3 only. Are you planning to drop V2? Might make things easier.

Paying from a WalkingLiberty wallet (which SporeStack has built in) can also streamline things, but I'm sure you already have a wallet system in place.

As far as BitVPS goes, I think it may have changed hands or been rebranded heavily. It's now more of a copycat of SporeStack. I think before it required email registration.

Thnx Teran! You build quite an interesting system with Sporestack. We are currently dropping Python2 support.

Great, thank you! I appreciate that.

No need for Python 2 support makes it easier. I'll look at the code and see how it can all go together.

Do you know roughly how many servers are launched with cloudomate, say in a week?
