Koshin et al (2020): ...it has been shown that, in the upper stratosphere and the mesosphere, Rossby waves are generated in situ due to baroclinic–barotropic instability caused by wave forcing associated with breaking or critical-level absorption of gravity waves propagating from the troposphere (Watanabe et al., 2009; Ern et al., 2013; Sato and Nomoto, 2015; Sato et al., 2018). It has been found that gravity waves are spontaneously generated in the middle atmosphere from the imbalance of the polar night jet (Sato and Yoshiki, 2008; Snyder et al., 2007; Shibuya et al., 2017), from an imbalance caused by the wave forcing due to primary gravity waves (Vadas and Becker, 2018; Hayashi and Sato, 2018), and also by shear instability caused by primary gravity wave forcing (Yasui et al., 2018).
@gast-ben, please see fluxes*.nc in gemeinsam_tmp/UA_students/data/PW_GW_analysis/. They consist of the following: GWD, zonal, and meridional momentum fluxes scaled by air density. Please revise notebooks analyzing GWD accordingly.
Examine momentum fluxes in "old" files (
/gemeinsam_tmp/UA_students/data/{station}/
) as in e.g. de Wit et al (2014).Motivation
Explanation of GW energy anomalies by selective filtering (Lindzen, 1981).
