Shit happens every day.

Wouldn't be cool to have every problem and its solution in a single page?

The common problem The common solution
❗❗❗❗ I have [RANDOM-ISSUE-HERE]. Where should I start investigating what's wrong? ❗❗❗❗ ❗❗❗❗ Is VERY important to read the page Downloading & Installing and check if you have done whatever I wrote there. I tried to make the page as short as possible, and contains VERY important steps to do and requirements to accomplish to make everything works. I HAVE to assume that if you are reading this you've read that page, and everything is this Wiki assume that you've done all these things correctly. ❗❗❗❗
See bigger! To start V's Fix need to apply some preliminary action. All of them need writing rights to game folder. If this error appear mean that V's, for some reason, does not have that permissions. Try to start the game disabling (temporarily) UAC, or start the V's Fix using 'Admin rights'. If you can't solve in any way see below
See bigger! Save as above, more or less. Also, be sure that game or any other files inside game directory is already opened/used by you or hackers when you press SAVE button
See bigger! (Image provided by Frosal6) Game isn't designed to be viewed in widescreen so this kind of things can happen. Unfortunately can't be fixed :( 🆕 FALSE! Thanks to nemesis2000 contribution, from the 1.04 version you can enable the 'optimized FOV' options from the Resolution tab. This will brilliantly solve the issue :) You can also edit 'fov.data' file (inside the 'scripts' folder) to insert custom FOV values for each scenario!
Depth of fields seems...glitched: things seems to be "swifted" See bigger! (Image provided by Foxiravoc) 🆕 This is a bug with the ingame 'Depth of Field' that can happen on certain config (Mainly on NVidia GPUs, from what I've understood). From the version 1.7 of the fix, you can disable it from the 'Graphics tab'. If you have this bug, please report me your configuration, so I could eventually understand how to solve it once for all!
Water look strange: like it's missing it's texture I bet you are playing on a laptop. Be sure that "Laptop mode" is enabled. If you have more than one VGA adapter on your laptop (Like a dedicated VGA and an integrated one) be sure to bind game to the correct one you have selected from settings menu. Unfortunately this can't be done automatically in any way so you must do it manually! More info here - Paragraph 'Graphical Adapter'
I open the V's Fix but I can't see....anything! Try to disable anti-aliasing and set the Models Quality to Medium from inside the fix. Otherwise, look below
Movies and cutscene seems to freeze, but I can ear the audio playing in the background as if nothing were wrong 🆕 Issue solved! 3 different solution, from the easier: 🔵 Install K-Lite Codec Pack (Basic version is enough). Watch out for unwanted things during install phase! 🔵 Uninstall LAV Filter. Check the last post here 🔵 Blacklist game in LAV filters.. Nothing work? Try to disable anti-aliasing and set the Models Quality to Medium from inside the fix.
🔈 I cannot ear any audio. No music, no effect, nothing. But everything else work as it should Thanks to unfussybonsai! You must change your speaker/headphone sample rate to '24 bit, 44100 Hz'. To see how, check THIS link.
🔈 Audio is low or muffled See above solution. You can also check your Windows audio mixer (❗) or go to main menu while ingame and see if SE and Music are at 15 (the max value).
🎮 My gamepad doesn't work as well as I would like This is a complicate topic. Please, read THIS.
💉 My antivirus has detected V's Fix as a malware! This could happen with some antivirus, but V's fix is clean as fresh air. Please read my explanation HERE. If you are in hurry, here's a VirusTotal scan of the v1.6 version.
☠️ I have another issue I can't find here Well, I'm sorry for that. Try to see if the problem is mentioned on the Issues list. The odds are that it could be. If not, look below

Known Bugs

These bug exist even on the original version, and they aren't caused by my fix. Unfortunately I'm not good enough to adjust them. 😑

The known bug My solution
With Widescreen Fix, bitmap element will remeain stretched. (Obliviously, but better say it) Complain to Konami
Intro movie (the one that play just after game launching) can freeze on some configuration. Can be skipped pressing any button. SOLVED! Check above Complain to Konami, or check the solution above. Or both.
In certain cutscenes, the screen turns black and the characters are barely visible. (i.e. in one of the first cutscene in the Tanker chapter) See bigger! Complain to Konami
On some boss battle audio...disappear completely! I must return to the main menu, go to SETTINGS and put back SE and Music to the max. What a silly stupid bug! I can't believe no one saw that during quality check! Complain to Konami
On Tanker chapter the marine commandant speaking video isn't visible or has a green screen on it. It's caused by some Dx8 api that don't work good on recent OS. Even original game has it. The only way to fix it is to play on Windows XP without SP2 (cause SP2 I think will upgrade some Dx library and break something). I didn't have found a way to fix it. If someone know how to deal with that please let me know. My desires have materialized as a fix. Thanks guys 😄 Use the latest V's fix available: the fix for that is already included

Debug Mode

Debug mode is introduced in v1.03 and help me to identify what goes wrong with the fix. It's VERY important to use if you are going to contact me in order to resolve any issues your are facing.

How to enable it

It can be enabled in 2 ways:

  • Launching MGS2SSetup.exe using "-debug" (without quote) parameter
  • Creating a file inside GAME DIRECTORY/bin folder with this name (without quote): "debug.sss"
  • 🆕 From 1.8.1, you can simply create an empty file called "debug" (without quote) inside the "bin" directory.

What it does

What will happen when the debug mode in enabled?

The fix will log every action you do and everything the fix perform inside a .txt file called MGS2_VFix_debug.txt that you can find on your desktop.

That file is REALLY helpful for me to understand your machine, your game configurations and other info I could use to solve the issue you are facing.

How to correctly use it

Is short:

  • Enable the debug mode
  • Open the V's Fix as usual, press 'SETTINGS' and then 'SAVE'
    • I repeat: press 'SETTINGS' and then 'SAVE'
      • Pressing 'SETTINGS' and then 'SAVE' is very important, otherwise the log could not include much of the information I need
  • Start the game, or simply close the fix (The best choice depend on what issue you are facing, but generally both should work good)

If the fix is crashing or give errors before you press 'SETTINGS' or 'SAVE' is not important: come as far as you can! 😅

❗️ 🆕 There are extra '.log' files inside the game installation folder, but the most recent version of the fix (> v1.7) automatically include them inside the main log on your desktop, so I don't need them

Have you pressed 'SETTINGS' and then 'SAVE'?

And then?

You can send me the log file MGS2_VFix_debug.txt (that you can find on your desktop) privately, or you can open a new Issue on GitHub and upload it inside the chat!
