I set myself a particle effect, not a photo, and I don’t see these particles anywhere, nowhere at all

I recommend you try this first. #694 (comment) (I had the issues my self and it fixed it.

I'm having this same issue with all of the background types - nothing happens when I switch them, toggling "Show background color as overlay" doesn't do anything. Image and video types don't even prompt me to select a file or anything.
Edit: restarting the app got it working for some reason.
