This is a pretty significant miss, as this helps keep interactivity and communications flowing well across the project. I'd recommend labeling this as a critical/high priority.

Also, to be clear, I'd view this an adoption blocker and one that I'd recommend against formally migrating to Slack unless there's a similar functionality in Matrix for the WordPress.org bot. Those notifications are all set via https://profiles.wordpress.org/USERNAME/profile/notifications/ and are massively helpful for staying on top of communications across the project.

Completely agree with @jeffpaul on this so I added a label for blockers and set this to be one

In all fairness, though, people can also get an e-mail for it. I agree that it's a nice feature but thus the blocker decision is not so obvious for me.

From an implementation perspective, the fact that there are no canonical DM rooms is a pretty big inconvenience on the Matrix side. The bot would need to keep track of the right room for the DM for each person.

So if something can be done with email, it should not be supported? Couldn't all of matrix be replaced with a return to email distributions?

I said that the fact that the notification can also arrive as e-mail makes me question whether this needs to be categorized as a Blocker.

Adding more forms of communication increases the cognitive load. Being able to keep comms to Matrix and P2 limits (1) the cognitive load and (2) the chance that a message/comm is missed.
