If I have a window that is assigned to multiple tags, for example if a window is assigned to tags 1 and 2, if I am currently viewing windows with tag 1 and I swap it to the other monitor, when I swap back the window only retains tag 1.
Is it possible to store the windows assigned tags before the swap, and restore them when swapping back?

I believe I understand what you mean, but it doesn't make that much sense or at least it would not be that intuitive.
So if you were to have moved the view to tag 8 on the original monitor and you swap windows on the adjacent monitor, would the windows just vanish (into tag 1 and 2 on the original monitor)?
Technically you could store the tags on a per monitor basis in similar vein to the pertag patch, i.e. it would be a hack that copies in the corresponding tag set when a client is moved from one screen to another.
Another approach could be to not have the client inherit the tags from the monitor it is moved to, as in a window that is on tag 1 and 2 would remain on tag 1 and 2 when moved over to the adjacent monitor, regardless of what tag set is being viewed on that monitor.
