A workflow instance can have multiple variables in different scopes. These variables can be modified over time.

In order to analyze an instance, it is interesting to see the variables and their values for a given point in time. For example, if you want to understand why a sequence flow is taken on an exclusive gateway. This can be hard if the variables are changed or added frequently.
