There are controlled vocabularies for a number of different metadata fields specified at https://github.com/PCMDI/input4MIPs-cmor-tables/tree/master (although whether this is in fact the correct source I need to check with Paul Durack). We should use this for our field validation, rather than the hard-coded values we currently have.
