I'm not acquainted with the nuances of locate command, but I suspect that through some scripting magic, it might be possible to ignore certain directories (e.g. ~/.local/share/Trash, or `.pyc etc.
It might also be possible to include a textbox to do this right in the settings screen.
I think that might make the experience a lot more pleasant.

You're 50% right about ignore magic.
Instread passing argument to 'locate', you should try dig into 'updatedb' which feed database to 'locate'.
Please check 'man locate'.
