Instead of just giving instructions, let the root page (without key= parameter) provide a simple form interface.

A link to create a new GSpreadsheet ( https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ )
A text field to put the full GSpreadsheet URL (addresses Let users paste entire GDoc URL #4 in part)
Dropdown for color
Dropdown for scale

The form doesn't really submit -- it simply constructs the URL and forwards.

More advanced features:

Maybe capture the GSpreadsheet URL automatically by loading in an iFrame first and then opening in new tab?
