setVisibleXRangeMaximum working differently than expected

When I read the documentation I expected that this will limit the number of entries on the chart. On investigation, it looks like the current implementation modifies the scale values of the limits? Is this the intended function?
I'm trying to limit the maximum amount of data displayed in the chart while also preserving the built in touch interaction. I was hoping to do this without modifying the data set for the chart. Is that currently possible?
