I believe that imagekit made changes to how the cache is processed. When using the latest version, I get a can't pickle error when saving. Could it be the invalidate method on save?

Very possibly. I'll admit I haven't tested django-croppable-images with the latest IK. It should work fine with 2.x but if you want 3.0 support then you might have to dig into the code - shouldn't be that difficult, but unfortunately these days I just don't have the time. Happy to look at a PR if it adds IK 3.0 support without breaking backwards compatibility with 2.x
