Highlight Y-Axis when hoving over series label

I would like if, in cases of multiple y-axis, the applicable y-axis could be highlighted when hovering over the series label in the legend. This way there would be an easy way for users to tell which axis belongs to which series. It might also be nice to hide, or gray out, and axis with no visible series on the graph.

This is probably fairly hard to do with flot. And by fairly, I mean really.

This plugin if i have understood the request does it but it has gone without updates for a long time (as has the entire flot project).
