Steps to reproduce

  1. Where are you starting? What can you see?
    After the Element Update to Version 1.11.40.0 we are getting the following Error:

    Thats german for "Server not supported, Upgrade to Matrix v1.1
    Element shows everything as offline.

AutoUpdate of the freshly installed Client from Element.io

Indeed. Synapse 1.31 from over 2 years ago does not support Matrix v1.1
Please update or find a different client

For others using Synapse, the necessary version appears to be 1.54+ from August 2022 which was the first to advertise API v1.1 (and v1.2). Obviously, a more recent version would be advisable, and may be available in an updates/backports package repo. But you may face trouble upgrading to 1.79+ if you haven't run with 1.60+ first. Debian's own sid (unstable) and bullseye-backports repos have 1.78.
