What did you expect?

Notification badges to be present where there are unread messages in notifying rooms

What happened instead?

Missing notification badges meaning that the user missed messages.

@rxl881 do you have any recollection of when approximately you did notice this issue occur for the first time?

@andybalaam / @weeman1337 I know this is the opposite problem of what we've been combating in #24392 but could this in any way be related to our recent fixes for stuck unreads? We haven't yet received any similar reports to my knowledge but it would be good if we could do an initial investigation to verify if this is a regression.

Thanks @Johennes we've had a look and we don't think this could have been caused by our recent changes, although we can't dismiss the possibility that we have somehow revealed an existing bug - if so, we don't know how!

I do think we should investigate this as part of the work we are doing on stuck unreads/notifs though.

I think I have experienced this too.
I just had two audible notifications in Element, and no increase in unread count anywhere, nor any room was highlighted.

Opening the notification panel didn't help, this presumably happened in an encrypted room.

Hi @Johennes -- I believe that I first saw this on May 2nd, after coming back from the early May bank holiday in the UK. I then saw the same on May 9th, after coming back from the next BH.

I just returned from holiday and got bitten by this again (unread notification badges missing from rooms) :( , using Element Nightly version: 2023041901
Olm version: 3.2.12

@rxl881 that version seems quite old actually. I'm on 2023060501. We've had an update bug on nightly a few weeks ago that required people to manually download and install the update once from https://packages.element.io/nightly/update/index.html. Could you please do that and let us know if you still experience the issue?
