There is an ongoing discussion around a common genesis file format at ethereum/EIPs#1085, this was lately revived by the start of the new cross-client Goerli testnet, see also this issue https://github.com/ethereumjs/ethereumjs-common/issues here on the library.

We should actively engage, integrate stuff here (minimally e.g. the terminology) which is settled and contribute with ideas where there is still need for discussion.

We are now for some time support reading the common Geth genesis file format in the client, will close this issue for now.

Note that on a broader level, this file format is still not standardized and further discussion and standardization between Eth 1.0 clients might still be useful.
