Validating the UX on actual users.

Tester 1 (tech experience: moderate, age: ~70):

• Can't find log in button
• Thinks h1 and h2 are the same
• Looks for an edit button on the individual sections (asked whether this is due to a previous experience with Wikis, apparently not)
• Doesn't find page edit button
• Irritated by overflow menus
• Irritated by edit mode looking the same as the actual page
• Small issue finding the save button

(Didn't test the visual editor in detail yet)

Possible consequences:

• Write "log in" besides the avatar (or just "log in") when the user is logged out
• More strongly differentiate h1 and h2
• Place an edit button on every section
• Write out "edit" on edit button (or any primary page action, we have the space)
• Add an extra "you are editing this page" banner
• Offer the "edit page" button even when the user is not logged in

I'm still not a fan of section-only editing. The edit button on the sections could still be for the whole page. The save button could be more- and the preview and cancel buttons less prominent. I maintain that the WYSIWYG editor should look close to the original page, but perhaps it should still be more clearly differentiated, perhaps with a colored border around the editor area.
