Create a Guide/Template: Trauma-informed Facilitation for your project

Overview

We need to create a trauma-informed facilitation guide for product managers and leaders order to be able to create spaces which are open for participants to engage with and learn about sensitive or difficult topics, but also prepare facilitators to be aware of signs of participants being triggered and be able to respond appropriately.

Action Items

The phases in the guide-making process are listed below. Each phase displayed in blue is linked to a wiki page with instructions on how to complete that phase. Open the wiki page in a new tab, copy the instructions for each part into the section labeled 'Tasks' at the bottom of this issue, and complete each task listed.

Resources

• This guide has some helpful information about creating a trauma informed workplace to support employees
• Trauma Informed Skills for Supervisors that has some good info. The intended audience is addiction counselors, but the information applies across the board about trauma and how to recognize and respond to trauma responses
• generally i feel like language, context setting, and making spaces accessible for folks is super important. starting out with access needs ensures that folks feel like they have their needs met. here’s a general resource about the importance of access needs
  
• this resource specifically focused around facilitation that is helpful
• and this one as well
• this is the doc that i go to for anything related to trauma-informed care. it isn’t specifically focused around facilitation but i find it to be a helpful primer. the principles are useful to go through when facilitating space to make sure that you are being trauma-informed in your approach
• community/group agreements to also be a useful practice. here’s an example of what they might look like. you would want to present these to the group and then have them agree/disagree/edit and then vote to adopt them as a group

Plan for next steps is to gather additional examples (there are more outside of Hack for LA in other brigades in the broader CfA Network). I will be meeting with others working on trauma conscious facilitation over the next few weeks. When I have compiled some examples, I will add them here, and resume the following step of creating a draft template.

Immediate Tasks

• Hold initial meetings (within CfA Network) to discuss potential collaborations and resource sharing
• Potential ongoing meetings and info sessions to discuss collaboration / resource sharing
• Inquire about practices outside of CfA Network (if applicable/accessible)
• Compile resources
• Draft summaries of TCF components with examples
