Terraform (and AzureRM Provider) Version

Terraform v0.11.13

  • provider.azurerm v1.32.1

Affected Resource(s)

  • azurerm_user_assigned_identity

Terraform Configuration Files

provider "azurerm" {
  version = "~> 1.32.1"
}

resource "azurerm_resource_group" "resource_group" {
  name     = "uaitesting"
  location = "westeurope"
}

resource "azurerm_user_assigned_identity" "user_assigned_identity" {
  resource_group_name = "${azurerm_resource_group.resource_group.name}"
  location            = "${azurerm_resource_group.resource_group.location}"

  name = "1234567890123456789012345678901234567890" # 40 chars here
}

Expected Behavior

According to changes in Azure, it's possible to create Managed User Assigned Identity with a name longer than 24 characters. Actually, the limit is 3 - 128 chars. Here is a link on documentation:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/managed-identities-azure-resources/how-to-manage-ua-identity-arm#create-a-user-assigned-managed-identity

Also, it's possible to create UAI with long name (more than 24 chars) via Azure Portal.
AzureRM provider has hard validation on name length which should be increased.

Actual Behavior

Error: azurerm_user_assigned_identity.testIdentity: expected length of name to be in the range (1 - 24), got 1234567890123456789012345678901234567890

Steps to Reproduce

  1. terraform apply
