Because NodeAbstractResourceInstance.readDiff can return a nil change, we must check for that in all callers.
This condition was missed when translating from the eval-node architecture, although it is a case which technically should not arise. We can see the panic in issue #29707, which can be left open for now to see if we can pinpoint the condition to better understand the underlying cause.
