A left-hand list of galleries and the photo contents of each gallery would be far easier to navigate, and take less clicks to move from one gallery to another.
Currently our users are getting frequently confused as to
Which gallery they are in
How to add a photo when they're in the 'Posted media gallery'
the difference between creating a new gallery and adding media
which icon is for a gallery and which icon opens a photo
can't see the names of the galleries or photos as the text blends into the background photo
Suggested solutions
Directory pane
Lefthand or topside list of galleries, with a darker background
Sub-galleries can be nested with an expander arrow
A plus icon at the top of the galleries list to add a new gallery
A clear icon around folders, showing multiple photo thumbnails inside rather than one
Names below the folder rather than superimposed (looking nice doesn't beat being able to read alas)
Photo pane
Photo thumbnails on the righthand side or below, with a lighter background
Description below photo (where provided) and date
Filter bar to filter by Topic, by Date and (once implemented with other bugs) Location and Username
A + symbol for adding new media (different to the new folder symbol)
A greyed-out plus symbol for adding new media in the 'posted media gallery' with a popup when clicked - 'Sorry photos cannot be posted in this folder, it collects photos posted in the stream for this space'.
