This is copied from the Markdown extension (microsoft/vscode-markdown-tm-grammar#156) but they said that the issue lies with the shell extension.

Consider this basic shell file:

The bash file is syntax highlighted correctly, but when the same content is embedded in markdown the syntax highlighting fails.
