pallet-vmfest-simple

A simple pallet-vmfest project for problem-solving.

The stack:

  • leiningen 2.3.4
  • pallet 0.8.0-RC.9
  • pallet-vmfest 0.4.0-alpha.1
  • clojure 1.6.0 or 1.5.1
  • VirtualBox 4.3.12 or 4.3.4
  • Java 7u55
  • MacOS 10.9.3

The current problem: can't converge nodes down to 0

We've created a CentOS 6.5 vdi multi-attach image with two DHCPed network interfaces and not much else, following the approach at eg http://pepijndevos.nl/2013/03/20/vmfest-base-image.html. We're tied to using CentOS 6.5 for various reasons.

We can converge up to 1 node, and everything works beautifully.

$ lein repl
(init)
(up)

But when we converge down to 0 nodes in the same REPL session...

(down) ; i.e. (pallet.api/converge {small-group 0} :compute compute-service-provider))

then...

  • an exception is thrown. pallet-vmfest is told that VirtualBox has received an 'invalid managed object reference', to an object with an id of the form xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx-0000000000000xxx
  • that id is always the last in a sequence of 7 or 8 such ids which appear in the vboxwebsrv logs for this operation. It's as if something takes it one id too far!
  • the machine is powered off, but not deleted
  • a subsequent convergence to 1 node creates a new instance alongside the old one, named the same
  • logs are as shown below.

We see this behaviour 75% of the time. Does that mean it's a race condition? The other 25%, everything works like a dream: the machine is powered down and deleted just fine, and there are no errors. It seems that if we execute the same steps but use a new REPL session for the converge to zero, the problem happens more often, but that's just an impression.

Log output from Pallet (also as a gist):

For log output from verbose vboxwebsrv, see this gist. This is for a different run exhibiting the same problem. Search for 196f7, which is the offending managed object reference.
