readthedocs are failing

i am trying to track this down - but in the mean time there are copious WARNING errors
related to files never being properly vetted (image files in the wrong place for example). please fix these by changing the links.

since there are no png files in the docs section anymore, it is pretty straightforward to find them.

similarly, there are table of contents complaints that have probably always been there. would be nice to get rid of them.

I have been able to remove the errors that we created by using incorrect indentation in our docstraings. and i was able to remove most of the warnings. the complaints about the TOC i leave to you, but they aren't making it fail. i believe it fails because of some style file that the setup is responsible for (presumably something got changed by readthedocs). so please give a look. thanks.
