Building Neo4j

General Notes:

  • When following the steps below, please use a standard permission user unless otherwise specified.

  • A directory /<source_root>/ will be referred to in these instructions, this is a temporary writable directory anywhere you'd like to place it.

Neo4j binaries are available and can be downloaded from here. To use these binaries, different Java flavors can be installed on mentioned distributions.

Note: Neo4j(v4.2.4) was verified at the time of creation of these instructions

Step 1: Install Java

  • RHEL (7.8, 7.9, 8.1, 8.2, 8.3)

    • With AdoptOpenJDK 11
      • Download and install AdoptOpenJDK 11 (Eclipse OpenJ9 or HotSpot) from here.
  • Ubuntu (18.04, 20.04, 21.04)

    • With AdoptOpenJDK 11
      • Download and install AdoptOpenJDK 11 (Eclipse OpenJ9 or HotSpot) from here.
  • SLES (12 SP5, 15 SP2)

    • With AdoptOpenJDK 11
      • Download and install AdoptOpenJDK 11 (Eclipse OpenJ9 or HotSpot) from here.

Step 2: Set Environment variables

  export SOURCE_ROOT=/<source_root>/
  export JAVA_HOME=<path to installed java>
  export PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH

Step 3: Start server

To start the server, extract binary tar to $SOURCE_ROOT and follow steps given below.

  cd $SOURCE_ROOT/<Neo4j_binary_folder>/
  bin/neo4j start | status | stop
