This is a serious issue. If Linux Mint is to become a gaming alternative to Ubuntu, it needs to be as good as Compton is at forcing applications to VSYNC properly to rid itself of all screen tearing. While some games have VSYNC options in them that work, many games (especially indy games) have no VSYNC option and have bad screen tearing. Even Totem has bad screen tearing, and that's the default movie player!
I think this issue goes deeper than just a VSYNC option though, because I don't think CLUTTER=VBLANK=none fixes it. See this Linux Mint thread here:
Using nVidia hardware + closed driver just like Corvias is, but I think tearing in Cinnamon/Clutter exists for many other users as well, so an option to force it on for everyone would be great!
I think Cinnamon would really benefit from an option to disable VSync- basically a toggle for the environment variable "CLUTTER_VBLANK=none".
