This would be both a good accessibility feature, and perhaps convenient for people using CLI clients.

Hey, thanks for your interest in Matrix. This kind of requests is more relevant to the Matrix spec (which Synapse implements) than Synapse itself, so I'm transferring this issue over to https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-doc, which is where the spec lives.
