Windows Build Number

Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.22458.1000]

WSL Version

  • WSL 2
  • WSL 1

Kernel Version

5.10.43

Distro Version

Ubuntu 20.04

Other Software

So I'm using Windows 11 build 22458 and when I'm wsl distro via wsl command that time I'm getting following error:
An error occurred mounting one of your file systems. Please run 'dmesg' for more details.
I'm attaching my whole dmesg output for debugging and investigating purpose.
I did everything which I could do but no luck at all/.
I uninstalled all the distros, completely removed WSL 2 and Virtual Machine platform, removed all the configs and left overs and reinstalled everything, but no benefit.
Still I'm getting the same error.
I searched the repo for the same/duplicate issues but none of the solution worked for me and I noticed that every issue is talking about the previous windows 10 builds and stating that the bug is fixed for them.
I'm not using any custom kernel, and not altering any settings.
I'm using all the defaults with the config and kernel etc.
I've tried many distros such as Debian, Different versions of Ubuntu, Alpine but same error persists.
Restarted my windows, but still same issue.
Tried executing wsl --shutdown and wsl --update via powershell(admin) too, but no luck.
Attached is my dmesg output.
dmesg.txt

Repro Steps

  1. Open powershell/command prompt,
  2. type wsl (PS: one of distro should be installed beforehand).
  3. Notice, the error will appear.

Expected Behavior

The error shouldn't be there and the file system should get mount properly

Actual Behavior

Got the dmesg error:

same to #7284. and solution is #7263
just run powershell as administrator, and type wsl --shutdown then wsl --update

Completely useless.
Already did that.
Ran wsl --update many times via powershell(admin)
Doesn't work.
Kernel is already the newest version

same to #7284. and solution is #7263
just run powershell as administrator, and type wsl --shutdown then wsl --update

From your DMESG output it seems like the D Drive is failing: [ 2.308677] init: (1) ERROR: MountPlan9WithRetry:285: mount drvfs on /mnt/d (cache=mmap,noatime,msize=262144,trans=virtio,aname=drvfs;path=D:;uid=0;gid=0;symlinkroot=/mnt/.

Is there anything special about your D drive? Is it an encrypted drive?

@craigloewen-msft
Yes, It is an encrypted drive.
Can it cause this?
The device is not decrypted actually.
Isn't there any way to exclude this drive from WSL?

From your DMESG output it seems like the D Drive is failing: [ 2.308677] init: (1) ERROR: MountPlan9WithRetry:285: mount drvfs on /mnt/d (cache=mmap,noatime,msize=262144,trans=virtio,aname=drvfs;path=D:;uid=0;gid=0;symlinkroot=/mnt/.

i have the same error,my partiion is an linux system partion, it's a raw type

Format that RAW partition.

@suifengshiqu

@Biswa96 it's another operation system in double system

Then just remove the drive letter of that partition in Disk Management or with diskpart tool.

@Biswa96 it's great, thx

I'm getting the same error on starting WSL since upgrading to Windows 11. However, my dmesg output doesn't seem to be particularly informative (couldn't find anything on which drive is failing to mount), but only the following:

[ 14.508167] init: (1) ERROR: UtilCreateProcessAndWait:673: /bin/mount failed with status 0x
[ 14.508170] 2000
[ 14.508176] init: (1) ERROR: ConfigMountFsTab:2529: Processing fstab with mount -a failed.

EDIT:

My /etc/fstab:

LABEL=cloudimg-rootfs   /        ext4   defaults        0 0
Y: /mnt/y drvfs defaults 0 0
Z: /mnt/z drvfs defaults 0 0

Y and Z are network mounts.

This affects:

  • network drives, samba shares, nfs
  • drives not recognized by Windows due to filesystems like zfs, btrfs, etc.
  • drives not recognized by Windows due to partition-id, no matter the content is readable

It also contradicts the default configuration for Windows developer-setup, namely show empty drives, which are automatically assigned drive-letters and can not be disabled anymore.

This is a BUG. Period.

If automagic recognition of mounts is enabled by default (which brings a whole bag of issues as it effectively works against the sandboxing-approach wsl is based on) there must be either full recognition on the host side, so the client can not fail, or it must be a sane preconfigured set. The fact that it even attempts to scan and access anything besides a separate directory in the users tree is scary, but on the other hand not allowing the use of host filesystemdrivers for extfs, btrfs, zfs, etc. and not allowing to map a partition to wsl that is set on the host drive is just nonsense.

I ask anyone actually working on wsl to have a talk and think about it - as this is (in the way it is setup) sheer madness.

Please open an OFFICIAL ISSUE addressing these points, they are all part of the same problem. Then you can at least see how many people are actually affected by it.

I too have same error on Windows 11, build 22000.434, Wsl2
Have 2 hard drives with Ntfs partitions. No special configurations, just windows os. no other os.

can it be that sometimes I happen to install multiple things. Windows Subsystem installation was going on when I installed Ubuntu app. Or when HyperV component was installing/uninstalling, I was configuring other components.

Same error with a LUKS-encrypted ext4 drive. I ended up offlining the disk in Windows' Disk Management but it's worrying there's no option to control which drives or paths are being auto-mounted.

This work for me. Thank you!. I had the same problem. My drive was also encrypted.
