Just now while reporting this issue, I had some responses from the shell.

I then started Windows Terminal, which opens the Ubuntu 20.04 by default, but no response. Then I entered the same set of commands of wsl --status and then wsl -l -v but no response is seen on the terminal.

I have the same issue on Windows 10 Pro (Version 10.0.19044 Build 19044).

wsl.exe just hangs, with no output, regardless of parameters. i.e. wsl --status, wsl -l -v both hang.

This was working fine roughly a week ago. I noticed since then I received two patches: a Windows update KB5021233 and a .Net update KB5021088. I uninstalled the Windows update KB5021233 and wsl.exe began working again. So it seems something in a recent update has borked WSL.

try uninstalling Store version of WSL - it seems this created a lot more bugs than resolved.

This is not a fix:
But reverting to the manual install instead of in-store version worked

I've uninstalled gWSL preview but that didn't fix the issue. Uninstalled the WSL from appwiz.cpl. I will see if the situation gets any better.
