Maybe we could add a brief paragraph in the README - something simple like "pip usually comes installed with Python, and updates are released regularly, with new versions every 3 months" plus a link to the relevant part of the docs?

Yep. Sure!

I'd prefer to not mention the frequency of the releases here, and just say "you can find more details about our releases at <release-process-link>" instead. Not sure how to fit that in the README so I'll let you figure that out. ;)
