$ ... $ as inline math delimiters

In hidden pref extensions.zotero.report-customizer.MathJax, the code {"tex2jax":{"inlineMath":[["$","$"],["\\(","\\)"]],"displayMath":[["$$","$$"],["\\[","\\]"]],"processEscapes":true}} did work at one time to allow inline math using $ ... $ but does not work now. $$ works for display math.

It appears that extensions.zotero.report-customizer.MathJax may be ignored? If left blank, the same result is seen, with inline math using $ not working and $$ working for display math.
