Installing the txt2wrk platform
Requirements
============
* Python (2.5.2 or later) [tested on 2.5.2 and 2.7.1]
* Django (1.2 or later) [tested on 1.2 and 1.3]
* A Twilio account (see below)
* An email account through which you can send emails via SMTP
* Web server that supports running Django/Python
* A database that can be connected to from Django [tested with sqlite3 and MySQL 5.5]
Setup
=====
Twilio
------
Because txt2wrk sends text messages to potential job seekers and also needs to be able to
handle inbound telephone calls, you will need to use Twilio to handle these requests. There
may be a push in the future to support a plug-in architecture to handle other SMS/phone
services, but it isn't high on the list of things to do.
If you don't yet have a Twilio account, go to http://www.twilio.com to set up an account.
Once your account is created, you'll need to find and make note of your Account SID and Auth
Token. These values can be found on your Twilio dashboard.
Email
-----
You will also need an SMTP-enable email account through which the txt2wrk platform will send
emails to prospective employers and case managers when a job seeker has applied to a job.
Find and make note of the authentication credentials you need to send emails via that server.
Database
--------
Discussions about setting up Django to talk to your database won't be handled here. If you
are having troubles setting up your database connection, verify that it isn't a problem
with your general setup and not specifically with the txt2wrk platform
Download the application
------------------------
The txt2wrk project can be found at https://github.com/rogerly/txt2wrk. Pull down the latest
version of the code by either cloning the project or doing a direct download of the source
from github. If you download the file from github, make sure that it is expanded into a folder
called txt2wrk.
Django
------
Verify that you have django running properly on your server
Setup txt2wrk settings
----------------------
Create a file called local_settings.py in the location where you downloaded the txt2wrk
application. This file will serve as an override for values in your settings.py that
came shipped with the application. It is strongly suggested that you make your
modifications in the local_settings.py and leave settings.py untouched.
If you look in settings.py you'll see a few lines that look like this:
# Twilio AccountSid and AuthToken
ACCOUNT_SID = 'PUT_YOUR_TWILIO_ACCOUNT_SID_HERE_OR_IN_LOCAL_SETTINGS'
ACCOUNT_TOKEN = 'PUT_YOUR_TWILIO_AUTH_TOKEN_HERE_OR_IN_LOCAL_SETTINGS'
# Outgoing Caller ID previously validated with Twilio
CALLER_ID = 'PUT_YOUR_TXT_CALLBACK_NUMBER_HERE_OR_IN_LOCAL_SETTINGS';
APPLICANT_HOST = 'PUT_YOUR_JOB_SEEKER_DOMAIN_HERE_OR_IN_LOCAL_SETTINGS'
EMPLOYER_HOST = 'PUT_YOUR_EMPLOYER_DOMAIN_HERE_OR_IN_LOCAL_SETTINGS'
# email settings.
EMAIL_USE_TLS = True
EMAIL_HOST = 'PUT_YOUR_EMAIL_HOST_HERE_OR_IN_LOCAL_SETTINGS'
EMAIL_HOST_USER = 'PUT_YOUR_EMAIL_USERNAME_HERE_OR_IN_LOCAL_SETTINGS'
EMAIL_HOST_PASSWORD ='PUT_YOUR_EMAIL_PASSWORD_HERE_OR_IN_LOCAL_SETTINGS'
EMAIL_PORT = 587
DEMO_ENABLED = False
Copy these lines into your local_settings.py and modify the values you match
your specific set up.
ACCOUNT_SID and ACCOUNT_TOKEN are the values you grabbed from Twilio when you
set up your account
CALLER_ID is your specific phone number you got from Twilio. You will need to have
your own custom and verified phone number from Twilio. The value should be all
numbers, no spaces, hyphens or other characters. Example: '1234567890'
APPLICANT_HOST and EMPLOYER_HOST are the custom domains (with protocol [http[s]://]) you
will use to run the service. Note that job seekers will connect to one domain and
employers will connect to another one. Using the same domain for both services hasn't
been tested and is probably not supported. The main URL for your running service should
be used for APPLICANT_HOST (http://www.mysite.com) while the EMPLOYER_HOST can be a
completely different domain (or subdomain) (https://employers.mysite.com)
EMAIL parameters are your credentials that you will need to send emails via the
application.
DEMO_ENABLED is a setting that allows you to run txt2wrk in demo mode. This is useful
when you want to showcase what the platform can do and explain to people how it works.
While in DEMO mode, job seeker and employer accounts are connected to each other, and
jobs posted in an employer account will only go to a connected job seeker account.
You can via a DEMO site at http://www.txt2wrk.net
Setting up txt2wrk databases
----------------------------
Edit your DATABASES configuration settings by copying the default settings from your
settings.py to local_settings.py (recommended) or by editing your settings.py directly.
Match those settings to your database instance. Note that both the job seeker and
employer sites share the same database instance.
Open a command prompt/terminal shell to the location where you downloaded the application
1. ./manage.py syncdb
This should set up your initial database and create any superusers you may need
2. ./manange.py migrate registration
Setting up registration database tables
3. ./manange.py migrate applicant
Setting up applicant (job seeker) database tables
4. ./manange.py migrate employer
Setting up employer database tables
5. ./manange.py migrate
Setting up remaining tables and loading default data
That's it. You should be able to run a "./manage runserver" and it should run a local
instance of your application.
