It would be good to use open software for the design, so that more people can contribute without buying licenses. KiCAD seems like a really good option now.

It's been suggested that Eagle might be a good alternative - there is also a free version and an educational version, though it's not open source. I am told it is probably easier to use, which I can believe, KiCAD is a bit of a monster!
