Many dependencies are out of date. Updating them will be a case-by-case process, but first we need to know what they are.

Update all dependencies to the latest versions you can, making sure everything can still build and pass tests.
Create issues for each relevant dependency update, as well as an associated PR for each.

Some progress in #432.
