I think the tagging system is awesome. But it could do with a few improvements which would suit my preferences.
1 I use parent tags to categorise other tags. On the tag page, I use a filter of Parent Tags is null. So I can get a tag page that just shows the top hierarchical level tags that house other tags. Currently if you click on a parent tag, it drills down on screen and the page shows the selected tag to the left, with it's image, a list of sub tags below and any videos that fall under this tag or subtags to the right.
My suggestion in system settings have an option to change functionality for the tag page. So that drilling into tags, when page for the selected parent tag renders. Rather than show a list of sub tags and videos. Do away with the videos and only show each subtag and it's related image in grid format, just like the main tag page. Until you drill down into any subtags, to a point where you've selected a tag that has no parent tag, and then show the usually tag stats to the left and a video pane to the right.
As some parent tags are there only to house sub tags for a tidier display. Having an option on edit tag to mark the parent tag, to be excluded from appearing in the drop down tagging list. As it's only there to house other tags and not necessarily intended to have any videos tagged with it.
I'm not sure if the next suggestion would come to fruition because currently a tag can have many parent tags. But like I said before, sometimes parent tags only purpose is to house sub tags. And if suggestion 2 came into effect. It would be nice if the list entries in the tagging drop down list could prepend the name of the parent tag before sub tag. I say this because I have parent tags called [Control], [Info], [StashDB] & [Tools] with varying subtags use to flag scenes for various purposes.
The ability to textually prepend list entries in the tagging window with the name of parent tags, would give better order of the list, indication of where the sub tag belongs and in mind of Control Parent Tags, a visual textual indicator of the sub tags' purpose.
Currently I could just manually prepend the name of the sub tag with the name of the parent tag and it would achieve this effect. But that would give an unsightly tag page.
If this suggestion is attainable. I think there are three routes. Because a sub tag can have many parents. In the tagging drop down list, a sub tag having many parents could either be listed twice with each prepended text of each parent tag. Doing away with being able to give a sub tag many parents to avoid duplications in the list, or the ability to set subtags having a prime key parent tag amongst other parent tags, so the sub tag only appears once in the tagging window. In mind that not all parent tags should textually prepend sub tags in the tagging window. It would just be useful for such control or flagging tags to be prepended to give a visual indicator of the subtags purpose.
Tagging list filtering would be a nice addition. For example I have the parent tag [Control] and it has an alias of .C. That when either typing the name of the parent tag or it's alias that in the tagging dropdown list, if the results of available tags populated and filtered to only those that have the entered parent tag.
This would make tagging so much easier when there are hundreds of tags. For example. If I had parent tags for Location & Sexual Actions with many sub tags. I could with the parent tag name or alias filter the dropdown list quickly, so that I could scroll through it's subtags. I get that I could just type the sub tag directly but sometimes you forget preciley what a sub tag is named, so scrolling through a list is useful.
