  • Markdown is a markup language (link to diff bet. programming language and markup language).
    • Developed by daringfireball crew
  • Goal/purpose: make it easy to write formatted text
    • Display of text, not full-fledged webpages
    • Make it simple to present information
  • Simple format
    • Very low barrier to entry
    • Readable as-is in plain text
  • Limited feature set
    • bold/italic/underline, headers, tables, etc.
  • .md files are parsed & turn into HTML (link)
    • Viewable on any browser
    • Possible to turn them into other things as well (LaTeX (link)), but not common
  • Standard file extensions
    • .md
    • .markdown
    • others?
  • This site is written in Markdown
  • And Github
    • Github-flavored Markdown
  • Resources
    • Markdown website
    • Markdown cheatsheet
    • Github Markdown
    • View the source of any of the pages on this website

I need this for another project I'm working on right now, so I may be writing this document this weekend.
