That's an OPN-specific feature. Neither OPL or ESFM have operator masking, where OPN does.

but, surly there's ways to emulate OP masking on OPL family chips, right..?

Not really. Even with TL 63 an operator is still somewhat audible.

To 'properly' mute a OPL family OP........... one also needs to fiddle with t' ADSR bits.........

e.g.

hence. a 'mute' button would make sense..... in one way or another.......
