On a fresh Linux Mint 17.1 install, the media keys no longer work. This is because Linux Mint installs a system level keybinding for them to work nicely with the media player (in the sound icon). For the interim, I have removed these key bindings (and now media keys work). However, we should attempt to bind to Linux Mint from the get-go.
